Where can I find authentic Mexican food in New York?

I'm an American of Puerto Rican descent,but I never in my life had authentic Mexican food.I know for damn sure,that taco bell is not real Mexican food.Taco bell is Americanized Mexican food,it's not the real stuff.Puerto Rican and Mexicans don't eat the same food,we are way different people.I live in New York and in New York the majority of Hispanics in New York are Puerto Ricans.Most Mexicans live in the south west,so it's very difficult to find a real Mexican restaurant,because most Hispanic restaurants are either Puerto Rican,Dominican,and some Cuban restaurants.


Depending on where you live there is great mexican food in NY. In most of the towns in upstate there aren't any. But the further south you travel from albany, the better mexican food you'll find. And if you live in the city, go to spanish harlem. best mexican food you'll ever have in your lifetime. Home-made and spicy!

Mexican recipe book similar to food at Santa Fe's Mariscos La Playa?

My husband and I recently went down to Santa Fe where we had dinner at a yummy Mexican seafood restaurant called Mariscos La Playa. Unlike the Mexican food I've had here it was really light tasting - no salsa in their rice, not a lot of cheese. It was more spice-based than sauce-based. We had fish tacos, steak tacos, and a delicious creamy guacamole dip. Can anybody recommend a recipe book similar to the type of food served in this restaurant?

Can you please suggest a vegetarian recipe with Mexican food ingredients?

We're entertaining some vegetarian guests and would like some creative recipes using Mexican food ingredients.

Start off with some fresh cut fruit like mango,pineapple and jicima. Not sure if jicima is a fruit but it sure is good for starters,or with the meal. You can make vegetarian enchiladas. Read the label on cans of enchilada sauce to be sure it is animal-product free, as well as the tortillas, no lard. Bean and cheese enchiladas are so good ! Now they have great varieties of beans in the stores, I like the ones with lime in it. Use that with grated cheddar and diced onion, some brown rice and slices of avacado on the side. This will fill them up for sure! Sherbert or chocolate covered strawberries for dessert.

My favorite one is "Tommy's Rice and Beans" from epicurious.com. It's a black bean dish. It's good by itself or you can stuff it in a tortilla with some cheese and salsa.

Easy Mexican Rice Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

* 1 onion, diced

* 3 cloves garlic, minced

* 1/4 cup olive oil

* 1/2 tsp ginger

* 1/2 tsp ground coriander

* 1/4 tsp ground cloves

* 1/4 tsp pepper

* 2 cups white rice

* 3 cups diced or pureed tomatoes

* 2 tsp salt

* 1 1/2 cups water

PREPARATION:

Sautee the onions and garlic in the olive oil for 3 to 5 minutes, until onions are soft.

Add the ginger, coriander, cloves and pepper and stir to combine.

Add the rice and stir to coat.

Add the tomatoes, salt and water and stir to combine. Cover and simmer over low heat for 25 to 30 minutes, or until liquid is absorbed and rice is done cooking.

My all time favorite is: a container of whipped cream cheese,a can of chopped green chili's, a can of vegitarian refried beans,and shredded montery jack and colby cheeses.Mix beans and cream cheese and chili's together and put in a glass pie plate. Top with as much or as little cheese as you want. Pop in microwave until all the cheese is bubbly. Serve with tortilla chips or use this mixture for the filling for tacos with lettuce and onions and tomatoes.

Recipe Ingredients:

1 small Onion sliced

2 Tbsp. Water

2 cups fresh Mushrooms sliced

1 Tomato chopped

10 Mission® Corn or Flour Tortillas

1 cup Carrots peeled and julienned

1 Green Pepper chopped

2 cups Zucchini julienned

1/2- 1 1/2 oz. package Lawry's® Taco Seasoning Mix

1 1/4 cup Monterey Jack Cheese grated

Recipe Instructions:

1. Place onion and water in a microwave safe 2 quart casserole. Cover and heat on High for 2 minutes or until onions are tender. Add remaining vegetables and taco seasoning. Microwave on High 13-15 minutes, or until vegetables are slightly tender. Set aside.

2. Wrap tortillas tightly with wax paper and microwave on High until tortillas are warm, approximately 45 seconds to 1 minute. Place 1 heaping tablespoon of vegetable mixture on one end of tortilla and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon cheese.

3. Roll up tortilla and place seamside down in a 12 X 8 inch microwave safe baking dish. Pour remaining liquid from vegetables over tortillas. Cover with wax paper and microwave on High for 5-6 minutes. Sprinkle with remaining cheese.

This is an easy vegetarian enchilada recipe, if your guests are vegan, you could easily substitute the dairy products for soy-based ones.

Corn Salsa

1 can sweet corn, rinsed & drained

1 can black beans, rinsed & drained

1-2 avocadoes, diced

cilantro, chopped (to taste)

1 container or jar of pico de gallo or your favorite salsa

Mix together and serve with corn chips. To die for!!!

Where can I buy ingredients for Mexican food in Madrid, Spain?

I am hoping to find a Mexican market or something that has fresh tortillas, moles, salsas, etc. Please don´t tell me to go to El Corte Inglés, their Mexican food selection is terrible.

Who thinks Taco Bell is really mexican food ?

Im mexican and i know that Taco Bell is not authentic mexican food.

Heck, its not even Tex-Mex food.(Food from Texas and Mexico)

Why do alot of people think Taco Bell is real mexican food ?

It's just like chinese food. If we went to China we probably wouldn't eat anything! lol That's how different it is.

I agree. It is not mexican food. I too am Mexican and it amazes me to see how many American's think WE eat Taco Bell in Mexico. Taco Bell is the americanized version of mexican food.

I had a friend that invited me to dinner and said she was making enchilada casserole. I said "what's that". She said enchiladas in pieces in a cassarole dish. I told her you won't find that in Mexico.

I made pollo con chile colorado last night, warm flour tortillas, arroz, frijolitos enteros estilo charro. That's mexican food!

Faint undertones of Mexican food. People go there for price and convenience. Here in Mexico we eat all types of ethnic food, French and Italian, Chinese is very popular now. An upscale Japanese restaurant opened recently in Rosarito BC. Food preferences emigrate too, if it hadn't been for the immigration of tastes, the US would have no cuisine at all. What? It's not? That's outrageous!

I worked with a woman who was born in NY, but her parents were born in China. She said the way her family ate at home did not resemble food in most Chinese restaurants in any way, shape or form. Restaurants serve Americanized versions of Chinese dishes. There is no such thing as chop suey in China. So it's not just Taco Bell- many ethnic cuisines are watered down versions of their original form.

No, it may not be authentic, but I see an awful lot of Mexicans eating there when I go in. Pepe the dog likes it, too.

NO!! Taco Bell is NOT Mexican Food. I am from South Texas and I am married to a Mexican man, so I know mexican food and Taco Bell ain't it!!

Taco Bell makes my stomach hurt really bad. Food from vendors in Mexico makes me sick for a week. Taco Bell is the lesser evil because of health codes in America...but I'm thinking any place in America but "The Bell" for this Senior.

Oh, and to answer your question...it is a little better than some Mexican food. It is worse than a good Mexican restaurant. Remember it is first and foremost basic fast food. It is produced in bulk to sell to the masses. It isn't a fine restaurant that have the best cuts of beef.

Taco Balls is industrial fast food that is supposed to taste like Mexican food. You'd do better buying tamales from the old lady selling them on the sly in front of the Safeway.

Fast food is in part responsible for the break down of American culture and it's values.

I totally agree with you and have had those foods. They are actually very good when I get the chance to actually try them. About 6 years ago I was in Morelos and my host mother (I was an exchange student) made my friends and I quesadillas almost once a day. They were probably the best mexican food I will ever have.

heck, even most mexican restaurants are not real mexican food. (Although, many of these are tex-mex). At least according to my mexican friends. Who cares. As long as it tastes good.

I believe it is Mexican food. In 2003 when I was in Cancun, Mexico for spring break there were Taco Bells everywhere. When I asked a bartender where a good authentic restaurant was he told me Taco Bell. Once I was inside, there were a lot of locals and a lot of other people from different countries. I've had other "authentic" Mexican food like South of the Border and their salsa was not as good as the packets I got when I was at the Taco Bell in Mexico.

Need ideas for good and fast Mexican food?

We're having a few people over this upcoming weekend and are planning on serving mexican food. I usually make enchaladas and shredded chicken tacos, but am looking for a few quick and easy appitizer type ideas that might be a little "out of the box". Anyone have any good recomendations?


Taco salad is a good party pleaser. You drain and season (mexican style) hamburger, then add them to tricked out salad ingredients, crumble some tortilla chips or nacho cheese doritos, add that, and toss it all together in a big bowl. Dressing choices on the side would include ranch, taco sauce, some like French or catalina.

Quesadillas are easy. You can prep the meat ahead of time.

Hot and spicy potato wedges? Rub them in lime juice, dip them in flour seasoned with chili powder, cumin, and salt, then deep fry them.

You can do hot and spicy cornbread...homemade or mix, sweet or unsweet, then drain a can of rotel (one can per two mixes of cornbread) some precooked bacon crumbles, and a couple handfuls of frozen corn to the batter. Bake with a light sprinkle of cheese on top. A variation is to deep fry these for hushpuppies.

You can also do lime sorbet for dessert...or a fruit salad spiked with wine, kind of like sangria you eat.

I guess a very famous dish is "Pozole" and it's also very easy to do. You put chicken in a deep pot (legs, thighs, breast,etc.)

You put like 2 liters of water(maybe more), 5-10 cloves of garlic, and ½onion. You put it on medium heat for 30 min. Then you add 1 cube of chicken flavor bouillon and salt to the taste. You add a can of Mexican Style hominy ( 6lb 9oz). Let it cook for another 30 minutes. At this time you may add more water it its to dry. When ready, you serve on a deep bowl. you may add avocado, lettuce or cabbage, raddish. We like to eat them with tostadas. Hope you like it.

I love tostados, and everything on them. refried beans with chorizo, sour cream, cheese, jalapenos, etc. they are great with refried beans and shrimp, or ceviche too!

Chicken Enchilada Ingredients

20 Corn Tortillas

4 Pound Chicken

3 Cups Shredded Monterrey Jack Cheese

4 Ounces Sour Cream

1 Cup Buttermilk

3 Cups Chicken Broth (you will make this using the chicken in the first step.)

1 Tablespoon Chili Powder

1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder

1/2 teaspoon Salt

1 teaspoon Ground Cumin Powder

4 Tablespoons Corn Oil

5 Tablespoons Flour

2 Sliced Jalapeno Peppers

1 Chopped Onion

Chicken Enchilada Equipment

Chicken Enchilada Equipment

2 Large Sauce Pans

Frying Pan

Cheese Grater

Spatula, or Tongs

Spoon

Measuring Spoons

Measuring Cups

First Step: The Dreaded Bird

Ok, lets get started! If this is your first time boiling a chicken it looks scary, but don't worry it wont bite (usually.) Most of the gross stuff is already taken care of.

If your chicken is frozen like a brick just fill up your sink with water and drop it in and let it sit there till it acts more like a refrigerated one. If it came in a plastic wrapper just leave it on during this step. This could take a few hours. If it is not frozen then just ignore this comment.

Take the chicken out of the wrapper and put it in an extra large sauce pan. If you cook it in the plastic wrapper it will taste funny. Now cover the chicken with water. Put in 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder. Put the lid on the sauce pan and let the chicken cook on a burner set on medium low for at least 2 hours. Once this is done see if it is tender. If it isn't then you will need to cook it for about 20 more minutes. Once it is done take the chicken out of the broth and save the broth for your enchilada sauce. If the enchilada sauce does not have chicken broth in it, it will be NO good. This is one of our secrets to great Mexican food. Now place the chicken on a cookie sheet to cool.

Second: De-boning Chicken

Once you have removed the broth from the chicken, and the chicken has cooled, take the skin off. Then take all the meat off of the bones. Just reach down and grab the meat and leave the bones. Now this is the important part: keep the meat and through the bones and cartilage away.

Now take the chicken meat and mix it with:

1/2 teaspoon Salt

1/2 teaspoon Ground Cumin

1 Teaspoon Chili powder

Third Step: Grating Cheese

Grate 3 Cups of Monterrey Jack Cheese.

Fourth Step: Frying Corn Tortillas

Now it is time to fry the tortillas. Just fill a skillet 1/4th inch full of corn oil. Then Place it on a medium high burner and let it heat up. Then take one of the tortillas and carefully place it in the skillet and count 5 real seconds, flip it over, count another 5 real seconds and then remove it from the skillet. You will want to blot the grease off. You will need to fry around 20 of these. This is so that you will have one or two extra.

(If you have never fried any thing before there are some safety rules to hot oil. One: Never leave it unattended. If you do, it could start your house on fire. Two: If you have children make sure it is out of their reach and the handle of the skillet is not hanging off were they could grab it. Three: Use the proper utensils to fry, this never includes your hands. I know My hand is in the picture, but I can tell you from experience hot oil hurts!) I am not trying to scare you, just trying to make this an enjoyable experience.

Fifth Step: Mixing Buttermilk Enchilada Sauce

Stir the following ingredients together in the sauce pan. Make sure this is done over a burner set on medium low:

4 Tablespoons Corn Oil

5 Tablespoons Flour

1 teaspoon Salt

1 teaspoon Ground Cumin Powder

1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder

1 Tablespoon Chili Powder

Once this is done stir in:

3 Cups of the chicken broth made from first step

Adding Buttermilk

Now is the time to add the 1 Cup Buttermilk. Stir it in well and continue to stir on medium low until the enchilada sauce has thickened to the consistence of thin gravy.

Seventh Step: Dipping Tortillas

Now don't worry we will take you through assembling the first one:

Dip one tortilla in the buttermilk enchilada sauce. Then lay it on a plate. (Assemble these on a different plate from the one you serve them on. This tip will keep the serving plate neat and attractive for a professional looking presentation.)

Eighth Step: Assembling Chicken Enchiladas

Now put 1/4th cup chicken mixture, 1/4th cup cheese, 1 Tablespoon onion and 1/4th cup of enchilada sauce on the dipped tortilla.

Add another dipped tortilla, and another layer of chicken/cheese/onion. Now top it off with a third tortilla.

Ninth Step: Topping Chicken Enchiladas

At this point you should have three tortillas and two layers of filling.

Top the enchilada off with a sprinkle of cheese, onion, chicken, and then 1/2 cup of buttermilk enchilada sauce. Then finish it off by putting a dollop of sour cream and a few slices of Jalapeño pepper.

Tenth Step: Sliding

This is the last step!! Just slide your chicken enchilada onto the serving plate.

My favorite is Chicken Enchlada Suizas, bascially chicken, corn tortillas, cheese, salsa verde and a sauce made of heavy cream. They are great. You can find a ton of recipes for mexican food at this website.

Taco salad

Chop 1 medium onion into 1/4" pieces. Coat the bottom of a large sauce pan with olive oil. On low heat cut onions until slightly crunchy. In same pan brown 1 1/1 lbs of hamburger. Add taco seasoning to taste. Pour in 1 can of ice tomatoes, 1 can of drained kidney beans, one small can of tomato sauce, and 1/2 jar of any Newman's salsa. Cook on low stirring often for about 15 minutes.

After cooked pour 1 cup on a fresh bed of lettuce for each person Top with a tablespoon of shredded cheddar cheese and a tablespoon of sour cream. Bon appetite.

Well, i know one, its easy to make, and taste great... its called a poor boy enchilada,

items needed:

Corn tortilla's

enchilada sauce

grated cheese

(optional)

olives

onions

n other toppings or what not

So get a rectangular glass thingy and put some oil in a small pan to get it hot n ready. also put the enchilada sauce in a small pan to heat it up.

when they are hot start to dip the corn tortillas into the oil leave em there for 10 seconds, take em out the dip them into the enchilada sauce then start to line the glass pan bottom, when u have competed the bottom, take some of the enchilada sauce and pour it around the edges so they dont get hard, after that put a layer of cheese and other toppings

continue again until it reached the brim of the glass pan.

when done preheat the oven to 400 degrees

place the pan into oven and let sit until u see the cheese all melted. then take out, let cool n eat!

Where to get supplies for mexican food in malaysia?

I live in malaysia as international student and want to try making the mexican food. but cant find the spices (taco mix, etc) , refried beans, tortillas, etc at my local stores (giant/jusco). or maybe i can sometimes find one piece here, one piece there. is there any store with a large supply of these types of ingredients?

and if you know the place, might you also know where i can find one near bandar sunway ? ;)
